Cornell Equine Student Spotlight: Lucia Younger
At Cornell Equine, we are proud to highlight the journeys of students who are shaping the future of equine medicine. Lucia Younger, a dedicated veterinary student, has been deeply involved in equine research, clinical practice, and mentorship throughout her academic career at Cornell.
A Lifelong Passion for Equine Medicine
Lucia’s connection to Cornell Equine began in high school when she joined the New Visions program, working in Dr. Antczak’s laboratory. This early exposure to equine research fueled her passion, leading her to pursue an Animal Science degree at Cornell, where she rode on the Cornell Equestrian Team and continued her research.
Now in veterinary school, Lucia has remained committed to equine medicine—taking on leadership roles in the Student Chapter of AAEP, participating in clinical training, and working as a teaching assistant in equine-focused courses.
A Commitment to Teaching and Mentorship
One of the most rewarding aspects of Lucia’s experience has been teaching her peers about horses:
"It’s been incredibly fulfilling to see students grow more confident handling horses. By the end of the course, those who were initially nervous around them are comfortable and skilled—a transformation that’s amazing to witness."
How Cornell Equine Has Shaped Her Career
Cornell Equine’s community has provided Lucia with opportunities to connect with leading equine professionals worldwide. She credits faculty mentors and hands-on experiences for helping her refine her goals as she enters her clinical year:
"The program has given me the tools and connections to explore different career paths within equine medicine. No matter where my journey takes me, I know the faculty and mentors at Cornell Equine will support me every step of the way."
Advice for Future Students
"Your experience at Cornell is what you make of it. If you’re passionate about a particular field—whether it’s research, clinical care, or specialized training—the faculty are always open to supporting your ideas and helping you grow."
